Kamloops Montessori Academy

Kamloops Montessori Academy is located on the corner of Greystone Crescent in beautiful Aberdeen. Our classroom is a calm, caring & peaceful learning environment that both children and parents love. The classroom is a carefully prepared environment that fosters independence, concentration, self-motivation and a lifelong love of learning. We believe our school supports the child's need for purposeful activities in an atmosphere of respect and encouragement.

At Kamloops Montessori Academy, we see that education is a never ending process and that learning is innate. Using Montessori materials and methods, our teachers are able to teach children about the world they live in through work within the curriculum areas. These areas are: Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language, Science, Geography, Art and Music. The materials in the classroom are self-correcting and utilize all the senses in learning. Because the Montessori environment s designed to encourage freedom of movement, there is ample opportunity for a child's social development. We study subjects using a didactic, hands-on approach and enrich our learning through guest speakers and field trips. Lessons are given by a trained directress (teacher) to the child through group lessons or one to one interactions. Each students' individuality is cherished in an atmosphere that fosters independence, responsibility, freedom, self-esteem and respect.

Our school is multi-age spanning from 30 months to 6 years of age. We find this span in ages a benefit because the older children help the younger ones creating a strong sense of community. In helping others, children reinforce what they have already learned and strengthen their sense of responsibility. The younger children in turn benefit because children love to learn from their peers and look forward to when they will be the older child able to help others.

We also offer an early arrival program, students have the opportunity to drop off their child at 7:30 am in a supervised classs.

At Kamloops Montessori Academy, we promote respect, independence, respect and kindness within our classroom, which is a great environment for your child to grow both academically and socially!

Holly Schafer, Administrator

Holly is licensed Early Childhood Educator and Montessori Primary Teacher with over 25 years of experience working with young children in many different capacities.

Prior to attending the Early Childhood Education Program at Okanagan University College, Holly taught preschool in New York, NY where she ran a program for two to three year olds called the “Two Group”.

Upon completion of her studies in the Early Childhood Education field in 1993, she was hired as an Assistant Teacher at the Okanagan Montessori Preschool in Kelowna, B.C. This was a wonderful experience! Having been exposed to many preschool and day care environments, Holly found what she believed to be excellence in Early Childhood Education. Holly found her niche in the Montessori classroom and could never imagine a career that could be as fulfilling and inspiring as working with children in a Montessori environment.

Holly went on to take her St. Nicholas practical training and examination at Pacific Montessori School in Victoria during the summer of 1995. In March of 2002, she completed The Montessori Foundations Level 1 Certificate at The Western Montessori Teachers College in Port Moody, British Columbia. Because of her dedication and love for children, appreciation of the Montessori Method, and the desire to offer such a program to the families of Kamloops, she made the decision to open the Kamloops Montessori Preschool Kindergarten and Kamloops Montessori Academy in 1998.

Since the opening of our programs at our main campus at our Greystone location, we have expanded our programs to the Aberdeen Hills Montessori Preschool/Kindergarten, Sahali Montessori Preschool and Kindergarten and Kamloops Village Garden Montessori.  Our most current campus is Juniper Early Learning Center.

Michealla McNamara

After completing her ECE education, Michealla went to Calgary Alberta, where she completed her practical training and examinations via the Montessori St. Nicholas Centre. In December 2001, Michealla received her Montessori Teaching Diploma from Montessori Centre International, London, England.

Michealla thoroughly enjoys teaching the Montessori method and plans to continue expanding her knowledge in this area through distance education and workshops.
